Closed-Captioning

Closed captions provide access to television viewers who are deaf or hard-of-hearing, as well as those who are learning to read, are learning English as a second language, or find themselves in noisy environments like bars, gyms, or airports. Activated through the user’s TV remote or on-screen menu, closed captions “open” the program’s vital audio information, like dialogue, narration, song lyrics, and sound effects. Subtitling

Subtitles are displayed over video as proportionally spaced characters, typically in white, with a thin black border or drop shadow to make them stand out against a light background. They can be a permanent, or “burned in,” part of the video, or they can be user-activated through the menu of a DVD or Blu-ray player. Subtitles provide foreign language translations of the program’s content or allow access for deaf and hard-of-hearing viewers.
